Wolfy and Johann were two kittens that were dumped off where they were unwanted. Wolfy would soon replace Heshe, who had left four orphans.

There will be a video at the end of this post.

Two Kittens Abandoned

In my last pet story, I told of my four one-month-old kittens who became orphans. You can read about it here. From Praise to Tragedy.

After the mother, Heshe, was killed, my son told me about two kittens that were dumped off at his friend’s house. The friend’s wife had told him not to feed them so that they would go away and become someone else’s problem. The kittens would not leave. Sadly, they were starving and all they knew was that humans had fed them before, so they jumped up on the windowsill and begged and pleaded for food. While my son was there, he helped by spraying water on them to chase them away. But, alas, they always returned.

Choosing to Adopt

In honor of Heshe, I wanted to rescue the two kittens. Shocked, I couldn’t believe that someone that I knew could be so heartless as to let two kittens starve. Of course, I shared my wishes with my husband, Gary. Being a cat lover, he said that there is always room. So, the day, after Heshe died, we found ourselves driving to get the kittens. Feeling guilty, my son’s friend decided that he had better feed the kittens since they were going to be adopted. However, it was too late. They were already a bag of bones.

Naming the Kittens Wolfy and Johann

The two kittens were at least a month older than Heshe’s kittens. We caught them and brought them home. I thought that the gray and white one looked like a wolf because of its color and its pointy nose. The other kitten was a light orange or buff color. After some thought, I chose to name them after two composers. Consequently, they became Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Johann Sebastian Bach, or Wolfy and Johann for short.

Feeding Starving Kittens

For starving animals or humans, when food is offered, they will eat too much due to thinking it will be a long time before they get to eat again. Looking back, I should have known better, but I let them eat too much, and then they were throwing it back up. I had to limit their food and then give them lots of love and distract them from wanting to eat so much.

Mia Gets a Home

For some reason, I needed to travel to Southern California. I had a friend that said she would watch my cats for me. She already had a rabbit and three cats. After watching them, she decided that she would like to keep the little black and white female which she named Mia. The rabbit had been very good with all the kittens and I knew that Mia would have a great home. Now, I would have three kittens from Heshe left named Columbus, Rory, and Natasha, which was later changed to Kika. Adding Johann and Wolfy brought the number to five kittens. I also had two adult cats back home named Pebbles and Trigger. That brought our cat total to seven.

Tapeworm Dewormer

If your cat has had fleas, there’s a chance they have tapeworms too. Tapeworm segments look similar to grains of white rice and are visible when stuck in your cat’s hair under the tail or by the back legs or in their poop. The good news is that you can order this medicine to treat your cats and avoid an expensive vet bill.

Gary with five kittens

Above, the kittens are all on Gary’s lap. Wolfy looks so intelligent. Below him are Columbus, Kika, Rory, and Johann. Fortunately, my husband really loved cats.

Wolfy Replaces Heshe

When Wolfy and Johann arrived, the kittens were only one month old and they wanted to still nurse their mother. They turned to Wolfy and Johann and began nursing on any hairy spot on the neck or tummy. After a few times, Johann wasn’t too thrilled about the idea and wouldn’t let them. However, Wolfy was very patient and tolerant and let Kika and Rory pretend to nurse. Columbus wasn’t really that interested. Actually, e became obsessed with jumping on our shoulders.

At one month, the kittens were starting to eat some solid food, but I gave them all goat’s milk for the best nutrition. Sadly, orphaned kittens just want to nurse and will suck on their own foot, the finger of their owner, or another cat or dog. They just want to be adopted. Wolfy’s kindness and maturity would later make him the alpha male.

Putting up a fence

Making a Safe Backyard

After Heshe was killed, we had a certain paranoia. Unfortunately, the cats had to stay in the house. Since we were homesteading, there were so many projects that needed financing. But, we chose to put our cats first. Gary went right to work putting in a fence. He couldn’t just use a post hole digger because there were so many rocks. So, each post hole had to be dug by hand. Happily, we had a strong teenager that was willing to help. My husband had never put up a fence before, but he was up for the ask and did a good job.

Adding Straw

The ground was very dusty ever since the tractor had stirred it up, so we put straw over the dirt. It was really nice and you can see Gary holding Columbus on the straw covered side and Trigger lying on the uncovered side.

Electrified Fence

Once the fence was done, Gary electrified it along the top. Sadly, the poor kitties had to learn the hard way not to climb the fence. It was also hoped, that the electric wire would keep bobccats and mountain lions out. Thankfully, all the cats had a safe place to play. In the pictures above and below, you can see Kika checking out the finished and safe backyard. For my own safety, I decided to have my devotions in the fenced area.

Below, Wolfy lies stretched out on the concrete floor. Often, he lies like this with his legs outstretched behind him. Who would have thought that this handsome kitty would have a heart of gold to adopt the kittens younger than him.

Wolfy

Watch the Video Of Wolfy Replacing Heshe

In the video, you can see Wolfy allowing Rory and Kika to pretend to nurse on him when they were still little and also at 5 months. So you know, I did give all the kittens goat’s milk. Butt must have seemed very strange for themto nurse and not get any milk. In the first video, Kika seemeed to be telling all about it. Now you can watch the video.
