In this post, I will share why I found myself singing to a deer and the benefits that singing to a deer will bring.

How I Found Myself Singing to a Deer

Down my driveway is a place where I have a compost pile and dump my rabbit’s box with leftover hay and waste. The deer like to come and help themselves to the hay. Last year, they helped themselves to my garden. Consequently this year, I didn’t plant one because I want to get it properly fenced. I am always trying to photograph the deer, but they get scared and run away as I approach. My cats were staring down the driveway and I saw the deer head for the compost pile. Quickly, I grabbed my Nikon D5200 and got as close as possible. In the meantime, the deer decided it was time to leave. Accordingly, I decided it was time to sing.

Benefits of Singing to a Deer

Deer are very curious and actually seem to like singing. For example, there are stories told of a group of people singing outdoors and as a result,  deer came in close to listen. And so, I wondered if this would work for me? To begin with, I had to think of a song to sing. What came to mind was “All Things Bright and Beautiful.” Clearly, it was time to sing or the deer was going to leave. But,  my voice wasn’t warmed up and I just ate, which always messes up my voice. When I began to sing, the 1st benefit was that the deer stopped, turned, and looked right at me. Surprisingly, the 2nd benefit was that the deer became calm and trusting. Actually, this deer appeared to enjoy my singing. So, the greatest benefit of singing to a deer is a willing audience.

Watch the Video of me Singing to the Deer!

This is the closest I have ever been to a deer that I have sung to. Actually, I was on the mountainside and saw a deer quite a distance away from me. When I  sing to them, they pause and watch me. Unfortunately, they don’t decide to come close to me. Also, on the mountain, I only have my phone with me.  In this video, the deer was about 25 feet away and I had my Nikon D5200 with a zoom lens.  Please excuse the shaking, for I didn’t have a tripod. Besides enjoying my song, this deer was also interested in my little “mountain lions.” More footage of this incident will be shared in another post.
