Why Sing “The Curse?”
You may be wondering why I would even want to sing a song called “The Curse” from the movie Rigoletto. Well, this movie musical has a message in the form of a parable. It also has all original music written by Kurt Bestor. Rigoletto is played by Joseph Paur and he has a beautiful operatic voice. I enjoy singing along with him on the CD that I bought with the movie soundtrack.
“The Curse” is Challenging to Sing
It is good to challenge ourselves with difficult songs, but it was frustrating when I couldn’t hit the high notes. This motivated me to do the voice lessons I found on YouTube called Verba Vocal Technique with Anna and Mark. It is very helpful to do the exercises and they have made me a better singer.
“The Curse” is a Message in Song
When we think about a curse, it is usually done by a witch, a sorcerer, or a witch doctor on a poor helpless victim. Without the protection of God, the curses work by the power of demons. But, do you remember that God also curses? Deuteronomy 18 from vs 15 and on goes over the curses brought on the person by not obeying God and serving him with joyfulness and gladness for all things verses 45 and 47. The message of “The Curse” is that a proud angry fool brings a curse on himself worse than any sorcerer could cast on him.
3 Ways We Can Curse Ourselves
The first way that we can curse ourselves is with negative thinking. Negative angry thinking can have an effect on our health and relationships. Second, the words that we speak can be a direct curse. I have heard people say things like, “I’ll be damned,” which is like cursing yourself to hellfire and damnation. A lesser curse might be to call ourselves dumb or stupid or to say, “I can’t do anything right.” A third way would be by our actions. How will we respond to a negative event? Will we get angry or depressed? How long will we choose to stay bitter? We choose the length of the curse.
Watch the Video
I do my voice lessons while driving to work and I also sing along with my CDs. In the video, I get to sing along with Joseph Paur. The video was made from 5 recordings and I chose the best parts from each one. I sang this song numerous times to memorize it and to try to get the timing down. It isn’t perfect, but I hope that you will be blessed.
Lyrics for “The Curse”
We’ve heard the tale since we were young,
Heard the songs that have been sung,
About an evil spell.
Someone beautiful is cursed
We feel sad through every verse
Til a kiss and all is well
The message that no one can see
Is clearer to someone like me
There is no curse or evil spell
That’s worse than one we give ourselves
There is no sorcerer as cruel,
As the proud, angry fool.
And yet, we cry life isn’t fair
Beneath our cries, the truth is there
The power that will break the spell
We should know very well
Is locked within ourselves
Yet we’d rather blame,
And curse our fate than change
We run from everyone to hide from the pain
And all the shame
The story’s old we know it well
About a wretched evil spell
The power that will break this curse
Oh I know all too well
Is locked within myself.
An Example of Breaking the Curse
I recently learned of Hal Elrod’s story. After a major car accident, he was told he may never walk again. 2 weeks after the accident his happiness had the doctors fearing that he was in denial. He said he was following the 5 min rule, and that he had 5 minutes to be upset and then he could say, “I can’t change that,” and then he could choose to be happy in a wheelchair. After 3 weeks, his bones had healed so fast that his doctors said that he could try to walk. He has since run a 52-mile marathon, become an author, and a motivational speaker. The choice he made was to bless himself and others and he received the blessing. I am including his video for you to watch because I think it will benefit everyone.
Conclusion
In conclusion, I would like to say that singing “The Curse” from Rigoletto is full of meaning as I see how I have at times in my life been tempted to let myself be cursed. I found that crying and being depressed or angry didn’t change anything and I had to come to the same realization that Hal Elrod came to when he would say, “I can’t change that.” It is far better to walk in joy and thankfulness with God and to receive His abundant blessings so I can have healthy homesteading adventures.
Amazing!
Keep up the good work and yes you are gifted with a beautiful voice.
Thank you, Angela. I so appreciate your encouragement.
I met someone, an American, but I am a Jamaican and we are supposed to get married, actually is complicated because of the Corona situation. We are against drugs. Anyway it drove him to depression where he pushes me away, sometimes he said mean things if I am trying to encourage him. He stweted blaming me. My heart is breaking, but i tries to stay strong. Recently we had an argument, and because I am tired of it, i broke it off. I still love him, still praying, but he’s dragging me down with him.
This really encourages me, I am thankful to you for sharing, God bless you beloved. Please continue to encourage others.
Yours truly Kazzadria Stevens
Kazzadria, You did the right thing. If he is treating you badly now, he will do it to you in the marriage. It is too bad that he is cursing himself. Maybe you could get the movie for him and have him watch it. I’m glad the song helped you. It sure blessed me.
Tamara
Hi i am Kazzadria Stevens, i thank you for this, I am truly blessed. I am a Jamaican who were dating an American, we were supposed to get married but because of the Corona virus, things became complicated, we are unable to meet. I do not have a visa to go there, he decided that being quarantined for two weeks here in my country is difficult for him. Eventually we tried other ways they too were blocked.
He got depressed and mean, pushing me away, avoiding me, accusing (sometimes it doesn’t make sense)
I tried reaching him with encouraging Bible verses, I reminded him of the power of God and His will.
He accused me of using Bible verses to attack him. Eventually I got fed up and broke it off. He’s blaming me for doing that too. I am sad and distraught. I saw this your post and it encourages me greatly, thank you for this. May God bless you and continue to use you to be a blessing to others.
