Considering that it was already May 4, and I had a friend pressuring me and mocking me that I didn’t have my garden planted yet, I felt that I needed to hurry. Technically, I should have done a soil test, but in the real homesteading of olden days, they couldn’t have their soil tested. They wouldn’t have bought a soil mix to add in either. I thought it would be a good idea, so I bought some planting soil at Costco. Before I even started to video my progress, I had sifted a lot of dirt and mixed it with the potting soil. I started to consider the ant and I truly wondered how the ants just keep going and going. Don’t they ever get tired? Well, I was getting tired, but I was not going to give up. I got this far with the hugelkultur and I wasn’t going to quit now. I hope you will enjoy this little glimpse of my progress. In hindsight, I think I should have used more manure and more soil. A hugelkultur is like a giant compost and it takes time for it to break down. Also, it needs water to soak down to the leaves, twigs, and branches to help it break down and I haven’t got that kind of water to spare. When the winter rains come, the process of breakdown will be more rapid. At this point in my progress, I was looking forward to covering the whole row and getting on with the planting.
