After my last post, I had just arrived back from urgent care and my son did all my chores and left.  I was doing fine until that night when I was going up the steps to the motorhome with the crutches.  The top step is larger than a regular step.  The floor is also popping up about a quarter of an inch.  I was trying to clear my foot, but my shoe caught on the floor and I nearly fell.  I had to put my foot down which was next to impossible the way the splint was put on.  I couldn’t help the girl out that was putting it on because the injury made it so I couldn’t dorsiflex my foot.  It ended up being too plantarflexed.  So, if I tried to put my foot down, the toes would hit first.  Needless to say, when I put my foot down it hurt.  I show in the video what I am talking about in case you can’t picture it.  I remembered how I managed to walk into the motorhome on my heel before going to Urgent Care.  Why did I waste my money on a splint?

When I got to bed, it was a cold night and my leg and foot covered by the cotton padding felt cold because the padding was wet from when the splint was made.  I didn’t think I was supposed to be wearing a wet splint.  Also, my foot was really hurting to have anything touching it.  I took off the elastic wraps, splint, and wet cotton padding.  It was such a relief!

I had to sleep in such a way that nothing touched my foot and I was able to sleep until 2:00 A.M.  It was a struggle after that with my toe having a shooting, burning pain every few minutes.  In the morning, I took 3 capsules of Heal and Soothe.  I noticed an immediate reduction of pain.  I tell more about this product in the video.  It is really amazing!  It works with no side effects!

When I went into my motor home that morning, I found out that I was out of propane.  If only my son and I had known I was going to run out.  I used my walker to get to the empty propane tank and was able to reach a new one for the exchange.  I used the walker because it was more stable.

I decided it would be a good idea to make a comfrey poultice to treat my foot.  I have fresh comfrey growing with my strawberries.  I used the crutches to get to the comfrey and picked about 6 leaves.  I thought it would be good to add some turmeric to the blend and I put just enough water to blend it.  It doesn’t need to be totally blended.  It needs to be blended enough to be mucilaginous.  I put a towel in a bowl and then the comfrey mixture on that.  I was using the bowl to carry the poultice to the couch where I would sit to put it on.

I also brought a bag to put my foot in to contain the mess.  Comfrey can stain, so a bag or plastic wrap around it is a good idea.   I kept the poultice on for about 3 hours and didn’t really notice any reduction in pain.   It takes a lot of commitment to make this and sit around wearing it.  I did it just this once, so I can’t say if it would have helped if I used it more often.

I have some comfrey oil that I made a couple of years ago.  Now that my foot is 90% better, I use the oil on my foot after my shower and it does seem to alleviate the little rise in pain at the end of the day.  Comfrey oil is made by crumpling the leaves and tearing them up and putting them in a mason jar.  They are then covered with olive oil and left to sit for 2 weeks in the dark.  Then it is strained and ready to use.

In the next video of this series, I will show how I did hot and cold treatments on my foot using the creek as my cold water source to bring down the swelling.
