We moved to a remote area where the neighbors didn’t have cats, so it was an unexpected surprise when Heshe got pregnant.
Heshe Grows Up
When we moved to our property, Heshe was still a kitten. You can see her size in this post about our move. https://healthyhomesteadingadventures.com/on-the-move-to-the-homestead/
We were busy trying to survive, setting up the homestead, and getting work, when Heshe got pregnant. I guess it didn’t occur to me to be a top priority to get Heshe fixed. Besides, there weren’t any male cats around that could get her pregnant. Clearly, if you have an unspayed female, you should never assume anything.
We had a cat door so that the cats could come and go. At this point, we had Pebbles (She was spayed.) and Trigger (He was neutered). One day as we arrived home in the dark, the headlights shone on a black cat. Oh no! It was too late. Heshe had grown up and had a boyfriend.
Heshe Gets Pregnant
Of course, we broke up the relationship in hopes that it wasn’t too late, but it was no use. Heshe was pregnant, and the proof was in her growing belly. She was going to have kittens. This was back in the year 2013. I posted pictures of her delivery on Facebook on April 29. Trigger was her faithful friend, but I wondered how he would react to her babies. How would Pebbles react?
Labor Begins
On Sabbath, April 27, 2013, Heshe, as a fat pregnant mama, followed me to the moss-covered rocks where I have my devotions. She was a little agitated. On Sunday, she wouldn’t even sit on my lap. She kept on meowing, walking away, coming back, and sitting on me for a few seconds and meowing as if she was in heat or distress. I figured she was getting some labor pains.
Back in the house, she started looking for a place to have her babies. She tried to go under my gray desk by squeezing through some boxes, but she was now too fat. I moved the box and put a blanket in for her. Trigger came and joined her and she was happy.
Heshe in Hard Labor
I thought that Trigger was going to be the mid”husband”, but when the time for hard labor came, he went outside to hunt. Heshe did not stay in her prepared space. She wanted someone near. If I left the house, she followed me crying. So, I went back into the house and lay on my bed.
She came up with me and scratched at my armpit and tried to push her head under my shoulder. That was not a good place to have babies. She did keep going back to the desk. I went to bed at 10:30 with no babies born yet. At this point, Heshe was happy to stay under the desk.

Trigger Checks on Heshe
I woke up at 12:30 A.M. and two kittens were already born. Trigger dashed into the house for a quick look. Then, he ran off. This morning, when all the kittens were born, I brought Trigger for another look. He hissed and ran away.
Heshe curled up around her babies and was a very protective mom. She got to rest before she had the next one.
There were still just two kittens. It would be nice if that was all that she had.
The Third Kitten is Born
I woke up again around 2:30 and another one was born with the afterbirth still attached. She had a two-hour break before it was born. The above picture shows the kittens clearly. I can tell who they are. From left to right, they are Rory, Kika, and Columbus.
In the above picture, the kittens have changed places and it is Kika, Rory, and Columbus.
The Fourth Kitten Arrives
At 3:30, I awoke to the meow of the fourth kitten. I woke up every hour after that, but she only had four. I ended up giving the fourth one to a friend and she named her Mia. From left to right, the kittens are Mia, Rory, Kika, and Columbus.
6+6Heshe Takes a Break
The new mom left to eat breakfast at 6:30 A.M. I thought she would be full after eating four afterbirths. Her absence gave me a chance to get a better picture of her new family. In the above picture from left to right, we have Rory, Columbus, Mia, and Kika.
Naming the Kittens
My daughter gave names to Rory and Columbus. Columbus would not stay confined when his eyes opened. He was a world-class explorer, hence the name, Columbus. I named Kika. Rory has a skittish personality which he got from his wild dad.
Conclusion
I found out later that a wild cat colony lived two to three miles away. There is no hiding a female in heat. I did learn my lesson and got all my cats spayed and neutered to prevent this from happening again. Thanks for joining me today for this fun adventure.

Have you heard about the iTeracare device that uses terahertz waves to help you heal and feel better? In the 1980s, American Scientists discovered a frequency that matches the vibration frequency of human cells – Terahertz Waves. Terahertz resonates the same frequency as normal human cells, generating millions of vibrations per second.
