This is part two of Singing to a Deer. If you missed part 1, click here to see it. Singing to a Deer/

I was shocked to see a buck squat to pee. In this post, we will look at what animals we expect to see squat to pee, why the buck did it, and why I chose to sing “Side by Side.”

Animals that we Expect to see Squat to Pee

I expect to see female dogs, cats, rabbits, and rodents squatting to pee. I can’t ever recall seeing a horse, cow, camel, elephant, llama, giraffe, moose, or deer squatting to pee.  Now, we know that I am wrong about the deer. Can you think of any other animals that squat to pee?  If any of the animals that I listed as not squatting do squat, let me know in the comments. I am not certain about pigs, but I would say they are squatters.  What about goats and sheep? I had sheep and never saw them squat.

Why would a Buck Squat to Pee?

The logical reason would be so it doesn’t get urine running down its legs. I asked the all-knowing internet and found out that the reason is just the opposite. “During the breeding season, deer will rub-urinate, a process during which a deer squats while urinating so that urine will run down the insides of the deer’s legs. The deer then rubs its metatarsal glands together, rubbing the urine into the tuft of hair found at this location. Secretions from the metatarsal gland mix with the urine and bacteria to produce a strong-smelling odor.” A Few Facts About White-tailed Deer The purpose of it doing all this is to attract a female deer called a doe.

Why Did I Choose to Sing “Side by Side?”

“Side by Side” was a popular song when I was a youth. It was popularized by the Heritage Singers, and written by Jeff Wood.  Actually, this song was a hit and continues to be popular today. I chose to sing it because I knew the words and thought it would be an easy song to sing and it just happened to pop into my mind while I was wondering what to sing to keep this buck entertained before it ran off. Unfortunately for me, I had just eaten and my voice wasn’t warmed up. You will hear in the video that a couple of notes I tried to sing came out raspy.

Watch the Video

Now you can watch the video of me singing “Side by Side” to this buck and see him squat to pee.  It is amazing that he trusted me enough to do that in my presence. Click the button to watch on YouTube so that you can like or comment. I will also include the YouTube video for an original recording by the Heritage Singers. After that, I will put a video of the Heritage Singers 45th Reunion.  Enjoy!

Lyrics for “Side by Side”

Side by side we stand
Awaiting God’s command
Worshipping the saving King
Living by His grace
And moving out in faith
Jesus will see us through

Meet me in Heaven
We’ll join hands together
Meet me by the Saviours’ side
I’ll meet you in Heaven
We’ll sing songs together
Brothers and Sisters, I’ll be there

Soldiers all are we
To go where Jesus leads
To fight the foe and we will overcome
Heaven is our goal
To save every soul
Pray that we all will be there

Meet me in Heaven
We’ll join hands together
Meet me by the Saviours’ side
I’ll meet you in Heaven
We’ll sing songs together
Brothers and Sisters, I’ll be there

Meet me in Heaven
We’ll join hands together
Meet me by the Saviours’ side
I’ll meet you in Heaven
We’ll sing songs together
Brothers and Sisters, I’ll be there
Pray that we all will be there
