Have you ever noticed how well plants grow after a fire? I noticed this in Fallbrook, California after a fire that some purple flowers covered the hillside. You can see the flowers and my young daughter in the picture below. I figured that it might be a good idea to add some ashes to my hugel kultur. I am aware of all the warnings about not using it if you already have alkaline soil. I figured that the oak leaves would be pretty acidic, so I should add some.
Ashes are high in potash or phosphorus which plants need to grow and be healthy. I tried to not put too much. This video took place on May 1, so I have since finished my hugel kultur. Some of my plants are doing well, and others are not. I am not sure if it has anything to do with the ashes or was it not enough soil and composted materials mixed in. It is all a learning process.
